Novel nanostructure approach for antibiotic decomposition in a spinning disc photocatalytic reactor

Conventional wastewater treatment processes are often unable to remove antibiotics with resistant compounds and low biological degradation. The need for advanced and sustainable technologies to remove antibiotics from water sources seems essential. In this regard, the effectiveness of a spinning disc photocatalytic reactor (SDPR) equipped with a visible light-activated Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2@CuO/ZnO core–shell (FSNCZ CS) thin film photocatalyst was investigated for the decomposition of amoxicillin (AMX), a representative antibiotic. Various characterization techniques, such as TEM, FESEM, EDX, AFM, XRD, and UV–Vis-DRS, were employed to study the surface morphology, optoelectronic properties, and nanostructure of the FSNCZ CS. Key operating parameters such as irradiation time, pH, initial AMX concentration, rotational speed, and solution flow rate were fine-tuned for optimization. The results indicated that the highest AMX decomposition (98.7%) was attained under optimal conditions of 60 min of irradiation time, a rotational speed of 350 rpm, a solution flow rate of 0.9 L/min, pH of 5, and an initial AMX concentration of 20 mg/L. Moreover, during the 60 min irradiation time, more than 69.95% of chemical oxygen demand and 61.2% of total organic carbon were removed. After the photocatalytic decomposition of AMX, there is a substantial increase in the average oxidation state and carbon oxidation state in SDPR from 1.33 to 1.94 and 3.2, respectively. Active species tests confirmed that ·OH and ·O2− played a dominant role in AMX decomposition. The developed SDPR, which incorporates a reusable and robust FSNCZ CS photocatalyst, demonstrates promising potential for the decomposition of organic compounds.

Effect of substitution on thermal decomposition of formaldehyde: A theoretical study

Unimolecular decomposition of organic compounds is strongly influenced by substituted functional group. The present work focusses to explore the energetics and kinetics of unimolecular decomposition of formaldehyde and chloro- substituted formaldehydes. Dissociation of molecular systems are observed to compete between molecular elimination reaction and bond dissociation reaction. It is observed that degradation of formaldehyde and formyl chloride ruled by 3-centered concerted mechanism produced H2 and HCl fragments respectively. On the other hand, Cl2 elimination reaction is generated via formation of isohalon structure. Despite of presence of isohalon intermediate, molecular elimination in phosgene required higher energy as compared to formyl chloride. Ease of molecular elimination in case of formyl chloride is attributed to favourable electrostatic interaction between hydrogen and chlorine atom, which assist in lower activation barrier. Further, the kinetic analysis suggested the applied temperature and pressure play a key role in formation of dominant elimination channel during decomposition reaction.

The enhanced strength and radiation efficiency of alumina reticulated porous ceramics via coal gangue addition

Al2O3 reticulated porous ceramics (ARPC) are widely selected for high-temperature porous media burners due to their excellent thermal stability. However, the relatively low mechanical property and infrared emissivity of ARPC led to a low lifespan and radiation efficiency of the burner, limiting its application in high-temperature porous burners. In this work, a novel strategy was proposed to synergistically improve mechanical and radiation properties of ARPC and recycle of coal gangue. ARPC with three-layered struts, including microporous alumina-mullite coating, alumina skeleton and filling layer, were prepared by polymer replica technique and vacuum infiltration method. The addition of coal gangue could obviously strengthen ARPC, because coal gangue was attributed to form mullite, as well as the generation of residual compressive stress in the coating of three-layered struts. The decomposition of organic compounds within coal gangue enhanced the degree of microporosity on the coating, thereby increasing infrared emissivity by 21.8%, which increased the surface temperature of porous burner from 857.4°C to 905.7°C.

Platinum-modified bismuth molybdate flake balls as visible-light-responsive photocatalyst

Solar photocatalysis is considered as one of the best methods for “green” purification of environment. Accordingly, efficient, stable, and low-price materials must be developed for possible commercial application. Herein, flower-like bismuth molybdate (Bi2MoO6) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by CTAB-assisted hydrothermal process, and then surface modified with platinum by photodeposition. The obtained materials were characterized by various methods, including XRD, DRS, XPS, SEM, TEM, ESR, photoluminescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical tests. Photocatalytic activity was tested mainly for tetracycline (TC) antibiotic degradation under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), including scavenger tests and experiments for different operation conditions (TC concentration, photocatalyst dose, pH value, in the presence of inorganic salts, water taken from different reservoirs). It has been found that the best photocatalyst containing 0.5 wt% of platinum exhibits 94.2% TC removal during 60-min visible-light irradiation, reaching the reaction rate constant of 0.0392 min-1 (exceeding the data reported up to now). It is proposed that exceptional photocatalytic performance is caused by the synergy between the uniform flower structure (efficient light harvesting and large specific surface area) and double function of platinum deposits, i.e., as a sink for electrons (hindering charge carriers’ recombination) and a plasmonic sensitizer (allowing energy transfer from excited platinum to oxygen). Superoxide radicals (•O2-) are the main oxidation species, as proven by the quenching experiments and EPR analysis. However, in the case of platinum-modified samples, singlet oxygen plays also an important role, and thus an energy transfer from plasmonic platinum to oxygen could be expected. Additionally, TC degradation pathways, elucidated by the detection of intermediates, and the toxicity data (TC and its degradation products), assessed by a quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) method, have confirmed that photocatalytic degradation of TC is indeed an environmental-friendly method, highly recommended for the decomposition of persistent organic compounds.

Halotolerant Benzoic Acid-Degrading Bacteria of the Genus <i>Dietzia</i>

Six benzoic acid-degrading bacteria of the genus Dietzia were isolated from the saline ecotopes of the Verkhnekamskoe and Yakshinskoe salt deposits (Perm region, Komi Republic, Russia). Benzoic acid (BA) may accumulate in ecosystems through technogenic processes, as well as during the microbiological decomposition of complex organic compounds containing an aromatic ring. The strains studied here were found to be closely related to D. psychralcaliphila, D. kunjamensis subsp. kunjamensis, D. cercidiphylli, and D. maris. It was shown that they are halotolerant and able to thrive on BA as their sole carbon and energy source in the absence of salt or in the presence of 50–70 g/L NaCl. They also contain benA genes encoding the α-subunit of benzoate 1,2-dioxygenase, the key enzyme of BA degradation. The highest level of similarity (79.32–91.38%) was observed between the nucleotide sequences of the benA genes of the strains considered and the homologous sequences of Actinomycetes representatives from genera such as Dietzia, Mycolicibacterium, Geodermatophilus, Pseudonocardia, Corynebacterium, and Raineyella. The described active BA degraders belonging to the genus Dietzia have the potential to aid in the development of bioremediation techniques for environmental objects contaminated with mono(poly)aromatic pollutants and subject to salting.

A mixed blessing of influent leachate microbes in downstream biotreatment systems of a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant

In landfill leachate treatment plants (LLTPs), the microbiome plays a pivotal role in the decomposition of organic compounds, reduction in nutrient levels, and elimination of toxins. However, the effects of microbes in landfill leachate influents on downstream treatment systems remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we collected 23 metagenomic and 12 metatranscriptomic samples from landfill leachate and activated sludge from various treatment units in a full-scale LLTP. We successfully recovered 1,152 non-redundant metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), encompassing a wide taxonomic range, including 48 phyla, 95 classes, 166 orders, 247 families, 238 genera, and 1,152 species. More diverse microbes were observed in the influent leachate than in the downstream biotreatment systems, among which, an unprecedented ∼30 % of microbes with transcriptional expression migrated from the influent to the biological treatment units. Network analysis revealed that 399 shared MAGs across the four units exhibited high node centrality and degree, thus supporting enhanced interactions and increased stability of microbial communities. Functional reconstruction and genome characterization of MAGs indicated that these shared MAGs possessed greater capabilities for carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and arsenic metabolism compared to non-shared MAGs. We further identified a novel species of Zixibacteria in the leachate influent with discrete lineages from those in other environments that accounted for up to 17 % of the abundance of the shared microbial community and exhibited notable metabolic versatility. Meanwhile, we presented groundbreaking evidence of the involvement of Zixibacteria-encoded genes in the production of harmful gas emissions, such as N2O and H2S, at the transcriptional level, thus suggesting that influent microbes may pose safety risks to downstream treatment systems. In summary, this study revealed the complex impact of the influent microbiome on LLTP and emphasizes the need to consider these microbial characteristics when designing treatment technologies and strategies for landfill leachate management.

Understanding the light induced hydrophilicity of metal-oxide thin films

Photocatalytic effects resulting in water splitting, reduction of carbon dioxide to fuels using solar energy, decomposition of organic compounds, and light-induced hydrophilicity observed on surfaces of various metal oxides (MOx), all rely on the same basic physical mechanisms, and have attracted considerable interest over the past decades. TiO2 and ZnO, two natively n-type doped wide bandgap semiconductors exhibit the effects mentioned above. In this study we propose a model for the photo-induced hydrophilicity in MOx films, and we test the model for TiO2/Si and ZnO/Si heterojunctions. Experimentally, we employ a wet exposure technique whereby the MOx surface is exposed to UV light while a water droplet is sitting on the surface, which allows for a continuous recording of contact angles during illumination. The proposed model and the experimental techniques allow a determination of minority carrier diffusion lengths by contact angle measurements and suggest design rules for materials exhibiting photocatalytic hydrophilicity. We expect that this methodology can be extended to improve our physical understanding of other photocatalytic surface effects.

Detailed mechanism study of volatile organic compound decomposition and oxidation removal based on a ReaxFF MD method.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are typical air pollutants as well as gaseous wastes that contain energy. Utilization and disposition of VOCs is currently an important research hotspot in the field of atmospheric environment. In this paper, the thermal cracking and oxidation reaction processes of typical VOCs components were modelled and analyzed by combining molecular dynamics and detailed reaction mechanisms, focusing on the effects of temperature, oxygen and other conditions on the conversion of VOCs. The results of molecular dynamics studies show that improving temperature and reaction time benefit the decomposition of VOCs. High temperatures under an inert atmosphere can sufficiently crack the VOCs themselves, but other by-products are generated, which in turn cause secondary pollution. The activation energies derived by ReaxFF-MD calculation are 328 kJ mol-1, 147 kJ mol-1 and 121 kJ mol-1 for toluene, styrene and benzaldehyde respectively, which is consistent with experimental results. Under the oxygen atmosphere, the conversion rate of VOCs is greatly increased and the reaction temperature is significantly reduced. Meanwhile, the oxidation reaction fully converts VOCs into non-polluting products such as CO2 and H2O. Detailed kinetic studies show that initial oxidation of toluene molecules raised by hydrogen abstraction reaction is the dominant step during toluene oxidation, which significantly improved the decomposition efficiency of toluene.

Individual and combined effects of earthworms and Sphingobacterium sp. on soil organic C, N forms and enzyme activities in non-contaminated and Cd-contaminated soil

Earthworms and Sphingobacterium sp. are known for their strong organic compound decomposition ability and wide distribution in soil. However, interactions of soil organic matter decomposition with soil properties and whether microbial species such as Sphingobacterium sp. could assist earthworms in carbon and nitrogen transformation in soil remain poorly understood. Earthworms (Eisenia fetida, Amynthas gracilis) and Sphingobacterium sp. were introduced in non-contaminated and cadmium-contaminated soils under controlled laboratory conditions for 20 days. We examined their individual or combined effects on carbon and nitrogen forms and related enzyme activities to assess their influence on soil C and N cycling. Individual Sphingobacterium sp. inoculation led to significantly decreased organic carbon (SOC) contents, reducing it by 16.5% in non-contaminated soil and by 3.77%, in Cd-contaminated soil. It resulted in an increased microbial biomass carbon (MBC) contents, reaching 1685 ± 292 mg·kg−1 in non-contaminated soil. Individual introductions of E. fetida and A. gracilis caused a decline in SOC content in non-contaminated soil, but increased significantly dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and alkali-hydrolysable nitrogen (AN) contents by 75.8%, 53.6% and 32.9%, 20.9%, respectively. In contrast, in Cd-contaminated soil, only the significant combined effects of earthworms and Sphingobacterium sp. were linked to significant increase in SOC contents, raising by 7.22% and 9.64% in E. fetida + Sphingobacterium sp. and A. gracilis + Sphingobacterium sp. treatments, respectively. In non-contaminate soil, the combined effects of earthworm and Sphingobacterium sp. further increased DOC and AN content by 212%, 134% and 31.3%, 25.4% in the treatments of E. fetida + Sphingobacterium sp. and A. gracilis + Sphingobacterium sp., respectively; the highest ratios of DOC to SOC and AN to total Nitrogen (TN) were found in the earthworm + Sphingobacterium sp. treatments as well. In non-contaminated soil, Sphingobacterium sp. and earthworms mainly influenced β-glucosidase (BG), urease (URE), N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG) activities and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis (FDA) hydrolysis, while in Cd-contaminated soil, they mainly influenced invertase (INV), NAG, URE, and protease (PRO) activities. Principal component analysis indicated that in non-contaminated soil, the earthworm activities dominated the mineralization processes of soil carbon and nitrogen, and Sphingobacterium sp. can intensify this process when it was inoculated in soil along with earthworms. Furthermore, both earthworm species increased C and N levels by elevated INV and PRO activities in combined inoculation. However, in contaminated soil, the impact of earthworm inoculation on soil C stabilization showed a species dependent pattern. E. fetida reduced C mineralization by decreasing URE activities, while A. gracilis enhanced C stabilization by increasing INV activities and decreasing PRO activities. In conclusion, earthworms played a key role in enhancing C and N mineralization in non-contaminated soil and promoting C stabilization in contaminated soil. Both earthworm species followed similar strategies in the former process but adopted different strategies in the latter. When introduced individually, Sphingobacterium sp. was able to promote mineralization in both soils, primarily assisting earthworms in improving carbon and nitrogen mineralization in non-contaminated soil but hindering these processes in Cd-contaminated soil. These findings provide insights into the combined effects of earthworms and microorganisms on carbon and nitrogen cycling.

Advanced dewatering of digested sludge through oxidative decomposition of humic substances: A comprehensive study

Advanced dewatering of digested sludge, aimed at reducing the moisture content of digested sludge from 80 % to <60 %, has gained significant importance due to the increasing use of anaerobic digestion. Unlike the residual sludge, the digested sludge exhibits strong bonding with water and contains a higher concentration of humic substances. Therefore, the conversion of bound water in organic biomass into free water and its subsequent removal have become critical challenges. In this study, three different oxidants, namely H2O2, Fenton's reagent, and KMnO4, were selected to pretreat digested sludge, focusing on the hydroxyl radicals generated by the Fenton's reagent in the decomposition of organic compounds in digested sludge, exploring the changes in dewaterability and the mechanism of water conversion. Additionally, a lab-scale plate frame was used to simulate the advanced dewatering characteristics. The findings revealed that among the oxidants, only Fenton's reagent demonstrated an improved dewaterability. When dosed at 4.30 mmol/g dry sludge (Ds) and subjected to a pressure of 1000 kPa for 30 min, the moisture content of the sludge cake was reduced to 50.32 %. The accumulation of humic substances during the digestion process resulted in a shift in control from polysaccharides and proteins to humic substances that governed the hydrophilic groups. The selective oxidative decomposition of humic substances using hydroxyl radicals produced by Fenton's reagent enables the conversion of bound water into free water, which can be effectively removed by applying pressure.

Bimetallic Fe-Mn loaded H-ZSM-5 zeolites for excellent VOCs catalytic oxidation at low-temperatures: Synergistic effects and catalytic mechanisms

The development of catalysts with high adsorption and low-temperature catalytic characteristics for the decomposition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of great importance for air purification. Herein, H-ZSM-5 (proton form Zeolite Socony Mobil-5) zeolite -supported Fe-Mn elements were synthesized via a two-step procedure (hydrothermal and precipitation methods). These zeolite-supported bimetal Fe-Mn catalysts exhibited a mesoporous structure, uniform distribution of Fe-Mn elements, excellent catalytic-oxidation capacity for toluene at low-temperatures, and high stability. Due to interactive synergies between the bimetallic Fe and Mn, the Fe2-Mn1/H-ZSM-5 (ratio of Fe and Mn was 2:1 with a total amount of 15 % to H-ZSM-5) exhibited 100 % toluene-conversion at 200 °C and T90 = 195 °C (temperature of toluene-conversion at 90 %) with GHSV = 20,000 mL/(g∙h). Its distinguishing catalytic-oxidation abilities at low temperatures were due to abundant oxygen-vacancies, adequate acidic-sites and various active oxygen-species, which improved the adsorption of toluene and expedited its degradation. The Fe2-Mn1/H-ZSM-5 catalyst also demonstrated a good resistance to humidity and renewable catalytic properties over five cyclic tests. The in-situ DRIFTS and LC-MS results revealed that toluene was decomposed to benzyl-alcohol, benzaldehyde, benzoate-acid, formates or/and acetate step by step, and finally CO2 and H2O. The mechanism of toluene oxidation over Fe2-Mn1/H-ZSM-5 catalysts was proposed and elucidated via the Mars–van-Krevelen (MVK) model. This study comprehensively explored the adsorption and decomposition kinetics of VOCs over bimetal decorated H-ZSM-5, which was useful toward the design of highly efficient catalysts for the removal of VOCs.

Planktonic and epilithic prokaryota community compositions in a large temperate river reflect climate change related seasonal shifts.

In freshwaters, microbial communities are of outstanding importance both from ecological and public health perspectives, however, they are threatened by the impact of global warming. To reveal how different prokaryotic communities in a large temperate river respond to environment conditions related to climate change, the present study provides the first detailed insight into the composition and spatial and year-round temporal variations of planktonic and epilithic prokaryotic community. Microbial diversity was studied using high-throughput next generation amplicon sequencing. Sampling was carried out monthly in the midstream and the littoral zone of the Danube, upstream and downstream from a large urban area. Result demonstrated that river habitats predominantly determine the taxonomic composition of the microbiota; diverse and well-differentiated microbial communities developed in water and epilithon, with higher variance in the latter. The composition of bacterioplankton clearly followed the prolongation of the summer resulting from climate change, while the epilithon community was less responsive. Rising water temperatures was associated with increased abundances of many taxa (such as phylum Actinobacteria, class Gammaproteobacteria and orders Synechococcales, Alteromonadales, Chitinophagales, Pseudomonadales, Rhizobiales and Xanthomonadales), and the composition of the microbiota also reflected changes of several further environmental factors (such as turbidity, TOC, electric conductivity, pH and the concentration of phosphate, sulphate, nitrate, total nitrogen and the dissolved oxygen). The results indicate that shift in microbial community responding to changing environment may be of crucial importance in the decomposition of organic compounds (including pollutants and xenobiotics), the transformation and accumulation of heavy metals and the occurrence of pathogens or antimicrobial resistant organisms.

Elevated CO2, O3 and their interaction have differential impact on soil microbial diversity and functions in wheat agroecosystems

Elevated carbon dioxide (EC) and elevated ozone (EO) due to changing climate have a significant impact on the plant growth rate, primary productivity, and root turnover. EC and EO could have a differential impact on the structure and functioning of soil microbial communities in terrestrial ecosystems via modifications in the microbial population, soil enzyme activity, decomposition of organic compounds and cycling of nutrients. For the development of sustainable agroecosystems, soil microbial communities are essential due to their major roles in nutrient cycling, crop-microbe interplay and resistance towards biotic/abiotic factors. However, it remains difficult to project how multiple climate change factors would affect below-ground functions. Free-Air CO2 and O3 enrichment facility (FAOCE) was used to explore the effects of EC (550 ± 50 ppm) and EO (65 ± 10 ppb) along with their combined interactive treatment ECO on the structure and abundance of soil microbial community, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) and microbes involved in N cycling in wheat crop (Triticum aestivum) under field conditions. The MBC increased by 20% in EC and declined by 5% in EO to ambient control. Treatments EC and ECO stimulated the growth of ammonia and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. Heterotrophic microbial populations were favoured under EC and inhibited under EO. Treatments indirectly affected the soil microbial community structure by altering N-cycling microbes and modifying MBC and MBN which eventually changed soil fertility and biogeochemistry.

The Effects of Low-frequency Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields on the Cleaning of Household Wastewater

The effect of pulsed EMF with a pulse repetition frequency of 16 Hz on the decomposition of organic compounds in wastewater in the presence of activated sludge microorganisms has been studied. It is shown that aerobic purification of a mixture of wastewater and activated sludge in the presence of a continuous pulsed electromagnetic field with a frequency of 16 Hz and a magnetic induction of no more than 0.5 μT accelerates the process of ammonification by 25 %, nitrification and denitrification by 15 %, reduction of COD by approximately 20 %.The intensity of the increase in the biomass of activated sludge and the rate of its deposition were noted.

Preparation of LSPR enhanced Z-scheme Pd/WO3@SnO2 for photocatalytic decomposition of organic compounds under simulated sunlight

The decoration of semiconductor photocatalysts with metal nanoparticles (NPs) is an efficient strategy for improving their performance via localized-surface-plasma-resonance (LSPR). For this study, a LSPR enhanced Z-scheme Pd/WO3@SnO2 photocatalyst was synthesized, which revealed excellent photocatalytic performance and reusability against Rhodamine B (RhB) with degradation rate of 100 % after 1 h under simulated sunlight. The reaction rate constants (k) of the Pd/WO3@SnO2 were ∼4.9, 3.5, and 2.1 times higher than those of the WO3, SnO2, and WO3@SnO2, respectively. In this Z-scheme-structure, the transfer efficacy of photogenerated electrons was significantly promoted due to integrated electric-field between the SnO2 and WO3, which was supported by experimental results and theoretical calculations. The deposited Pd nanoparticles served as an electron-transfer-bridge, as well as a LSPR excitation source, which played significant role in the degradation of RhB. The photodecomposition pathway of RhB was explored, and the toxicities of the intermediates were evaluated. Moreover, tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline-hydrochloride (CTC), doxycycline-hydrate (DOX), and oxytetracycline (OTC) were tested as common antibiotic models to verify the effectiveness of the catalysts. The degradation efficiencies for TC, CTC, DOX, and OTC over Pd/WO3@SnO2 attained 90.98 %, 96.33 %, 75.37 %, and 50.90 %, respectively, under simulated sunlight, which confirmed its strong potential for the removal of recent pollutants. Experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests indicated that •O2– served as the major active species in the photocatalysis process, while •OH and h+ played secondary roles. Finally, an LSPR enhanced direct Z-scheme mechanism was proposed. This study provides a rational design strategy for the development of more efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts that exploit the LSPR-effect for photodecomposition of organic pollutant compounds.

Novel insight of the thermal degradation kinetics, environmental impact and transformation behavior of heavy metals and chlorine of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash in nitrogen

Thermal treatment is an effective method to dispose of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash (FA), however, present research mainly focuses on the thermal behavior of FA in air, neglecting the investigation of FA pyrolysis characteristic in inert gases. The weight loss, phase transition, environmental impact, and conversion behavior of heavy metals and chlorine during the FA pyrolysis in N2 were measured using TG-FTIR-XRD-ICP-IC to increase understanding of the transformation process and decomposition features of FA in inert gas. The results demonstrated that CO2, NO, C-O(H), HCl, SO2, and H2O are emitted during FA pyrolysis due to the decomposition of inorganic salts and organic compounds. After being roasted at 1200 °C, the volatilization rates of As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were 56.71%, 34.75%, 99.56%, 83.41%, 96.22%, and 97.19%, respectively. However, the removal rate of Cl was only 51.43%, owing mostly to the formation of Ca2SiO4CaCl2 at high temperatures, which hampered chlorine volatilization. The kinetic of FA pyrolysis was investigated using FWO, KAS, and CR methods at heating rates of 10, 20, 30, and 40 °C/min, which suited the experimental data of each stage well. Chemical reaction (No. 2), assumed random nucleation and its subsequent growth (No. 11), and three-dimensional diffusion and spherical symmetry (No. 21) were the reaction control procedures of stages I, III and IV, with activation energies of 54.04, 213.03 and 280.85 kJ/mol, respectively. The degradation kinetics, environmental emissions, and reaction mechanisms of FA pyrolysis in the N2 atmosphere can provide a novel insight for pollution reduction and process optimization.

A review of prospects and challenges of photocatalytic decomposition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under humid environment

AbstractVolatile organic compounds (VOCs) are harmful for humans and the surrounding ecosystem. Emissions from these pollutants have caused a significant reduction in air quality, which has an effect on people's health. Alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, aromatics, and other VOC pollutants have all been broken down by TiO2 photocatalytic processes. Due to several operating inefficiencies and deactivation issues in humid environments, the practical application of photocatalysis has not been realized on a broader scale. The effectiveness of photo‐oxidation of VOCs is impacted by a variety of environmental conditions. In the photocatalytic oxidation of the VOCs, relative humidity (RH) is critical. Therefore, it is important to review the recent findings on how humidity affects the photocatalytic breakdown of VOCs in air. To satisfy this need, this work provides a critical review of the related literature with focus on the fundamentals of photocatalysis, photocatalytic degradation of air pollutants, and the influence of humidity on the photocatalytic process degradation for selected air pollutants. It also highlights the kinetic models and typical photocatalytic reactor and supports for VOC removal.

Light-enhanced metal-support interaction for synergetic photo/thermal catalytic formaldehyde oxidation

The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) plays a pivotal role in regulating electronic properties and activating surface oxygen species. In this work, we report light-irradiation-modulated SMSI for enhanced formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation. Specifically, the SMSI between Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and Bi2MoO6 created surface-active oxygen at Pt-Bi2MoO6 interfaces to activate HCHO to dioxymethylene (DOM). Notably, light irradiation boosted the SMSI and catalytic activity. Moreover, photogenerated holes in Bi2MoO6 improved HCHO adsorption and activation, while photogenerated electrons migrated from Bi2MoO6 to Pt NPs to promote O2 adsorption and activation, accelerating the oxidation of DOM to CO2 and H2O. The light-modulated SMSI and the synergy between photocatalysis and thermocatalysis lead to enhanced catalytic oxidation activity, providing a practical strategy for indoor volatile organic compound (VOC) decomposition under ambient conditions.

Comparison of Different Carbon Sources on Biomethane Production with Clostridium cellulovorans and Methanogens

Methane (CH4) has attracted attention as not only one of the hydrogen carriers in terms of energy density, but also synthetic natural gas. In nature, the decomposition of organic compounds is performed with bacterial ecosystems that can produce CH4. Clostridium cellulovorans as a decomposer was cultivated with pig manure (PM) as an unused biomass in this study. As a result of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, while formate and lactate were decreased in the C. cellulovorans medium containing 0.5% PM, acetate and butyrate were increased in it. Accordingly, in order to compare with the effect of carbon sources for methane production, the cocultivation of C. cellulovorans and the methanogenesis of Methanosarcina mazei or microbial flora of methane production (MFMP) was carried out in the C. cellulovorans medium. As a result, only the cocultivation with C. cellulovorans and MFMP showed methane production in 0.5% acetate medium. Moreover, in comparison with a carbon source in either 1% acetate or 1% methanol medium, MFMP was only cultivated after being precultivated with 0.5% glucose medium for 12 h. The results revealed that MFMP with a 1% methanol medium produced methane approximately eight times higher than with 1% acetate medium. After cultivation with 1% acetate or 1% methanol, next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis of MFMP was carried out. Interestingly, Methanofollis (0.211%), belonging to methanogens through the CO2 reduction pathway, was dominant in the 1% acetate medium for 72 h cultivation, while Methanosarcina siciliae (1.178%), M. barkeri (0.571%), and Methanofollis (0.490%) were major species in 1% methanol medium for 72 h cultivation. Since Methanosarcina spp. belong to acetoclasts (acetoclastic pathway), methanol could promote the growth of Methanosarcina spp., rather than acetate. Therefore, it seems that Methanosarcina spp. may play a key methanogenesis role in MFMP. Thus, these results will provide important information for low-cost biomethane production.
